It's late at night, you check the time on your phone, it's bedtime, you decide it's time to rest your head after a long day of work. The usual night routine, wash your face, brush your teeth, and then finally lay on the soft pillow that has been yearning for your head since you left it this morning, and proceed to close your eyes.

Staying awake, 30 minutes past, then 1 hour, and then 2 hours. Tossing and turning around the bed looking for the perfect position to sleep, as if searching for the perfect position would allow you to slip into deep slumber. 

This is insomnia. The shadow which lurks when you prepare to sleep and linger when you just lie there, unable to have a good night's rest.

Insomnia, a sleep disorder categorized as an inability to sleep, is fairly common among adults, a study from various groups of adults shows that 30% suffers from a form of sleep disorder and 6% suffers from chronic insomnia. 

Sleep disorders can manifest in different forms, whether it be irregular sleep patterns, waking up early and not feeling well-rested after a night's sleep.

This may lead to daytime tiredness, irritability, difficulty in paying attention, memory recollection issues and even depression.

Sleep disorders can be caused by a myriad of different issues such as 

  • Stress/anxiety regarding work or school

  • Irregular travel/work scheduling 

  • Poor sleeping habits

  • Deteriorating mental health

Although one can not always control the bigger forces in life, sleep is still an important means of getting sufficient rest.

A study of sleep was conducted and it showed that Essential oils such as lavender, camomile, bergamot, Ylang Ylang, & cedarwood have shown to help subjects with chronic sleep disorders. The forms of aromatherapy have shown to have a sedative effect on its subjects.
